Britain is the name for the main island comprising the British Isles and includes England, Scotland & Wales. A native of Britain is a Briton a word seldom used except when singing the song "Rule Britannia".Britannia is the Roman(Latin) word for the island of Britain from which Britain is derived. Great Britain refers to Britain and its many smaller islands some of which like Isle of Man and the Channel Isles are independent within the UK. British is the adjective used to describe collectively the citizens and culture of the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom arises from the union of the Parliaments of England,Scotland(1707) and Ireland(1800) at the start of the 19th century,1801. Today UK comprises Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Its flag is the Union Flag commonly known as the Union Jack made up of the Crosses of St George,St Andrew and St Patrick. However the constituent flags continue to be used today especially at sporting events where often England, Scotand, Wales and Ireland play as separate nations. For several sports Cricket and Rugby Union, for instance, Ireland plays as one unified country since the Irish Cricket and Rugby Unions have never acknowledged the political division of Ireland. Soccer however does and Ireland play as two countries in European and World cup championships. At the Olympic Games UK compete as one country, Great Britain & Northern Ireland. At the Commonwealth Games the constituent parts of UK play as separate entities.
England linguisticaly derives from the Angles who were one of many North German and Scandinavian peoples who settled in Britain and(Ireland) from the 5th century onwards pushing the Celtic or Roman Britons westwards & northwards, perhaps killing and certainly intermarrying others.Together with the Saxons they became the dominant group in what is now England giving the term Anglo-Saxon to describe the culture of England (and Britain)and sometimes USA.  However the official first use of the word England was when Aethelstan created the Kingdom Of England in 927 and as is often the case with kings of dominant countries laid claim to the rest of Britain.
The muddling up of England and Britain is not new and just the product of English arrogance with respect to Scots, Welsh and Irish. In the 12th century the formula adopted was "Britannia quae nunc Anglia dicitur"(Britain which is now called England).
The creation of the United States of America predates that of the United Kingdom by some 25 years and many Americans refer to Britain as England perhaps because most of the original colonists came from England rather than Scotland and Wales. Likewise many Continental Europeans refer to Britain as England even when words for Scotland and Wales exist in their languages. There is, of course, no worse insult for a Scot or Welshman but to be called an Englishman. And so the muddle continues:

   1)    United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland
   2)    England & Scotland are Kingdoms,Wales is a Principality and Northern Ireland a Province.
   3)   Inhabitants of the British Isles may be English & British, Scots & British, Welsh & British, Manx & British and Irish & British and presumably because of this also Jamaican & British, Indian or Asian & British
