Royal London Cup Warwickshire Bears  v Yorkshire Vikings Edgbaston April 19th

Neil Whitaker reports

WARWICKSHIRE and Yorkshire Vikings tied their Royal London one-cup match at Edgbaston but when the Vikings were 33 for you would have got long odds  on even a tie.

With two required off the last ball former Warwickshire player Josh Poysden and skipper Steven Patterson managed to scramble a single to tie the match.

Chasing 271 to win the Vikings lost their first wicket in the fourth over when Tom  Kohler-Cadmore when he played down the wrong line to Harry Brookes.  Brookes got his second wicket in his next over when Adam Lyth chopped on.

After his century on Wednesday Harry Brook made only three when he tried to pull Chris Woakes but gloved it.  The ball looped in the air and Dom Sibley at second slip had to dive to gully to take the catch.  Gary Ballance got a leading edge to Woakes and Sibley, this time at short cover, took the catch.

Only David  Willey stood up to the Warwickshire and looked comfortable attack but when he was fifth out  when he top edged a pull off George Panayi and found Jeetan Patel  at mid on with the Vikings on 89 with 28 overs remaining a Warwickshire victory looked on the cards. But Jonny Tattersall, who hit his fourth consecutive score of 50 or more in four Royal London cup matches, and Tim Bresnan stepped up with a record sixth wicket partnership of 128 for the Vikings against Warwickshire  in List A cricket  beating the 116 made by Bresnan and Matthew Waite two years ago at Edgbaston.

Bresnan made Warwickshire pay for dropping him early in his innings.  He clipped Brookes off his legs to Panayi  on the mid wicket boundary but he couldn’t hold on to it but parried it over the boundary for a six.

The partnership was finally  broken when Tattersall was bowled round his legs by Patel with 44 needed.

With 44 needed of the last five overs Bresnan smashed the first ball from Woakes

for a six over long. Two balls later he smashed Woakes to Patel at mid off who took a great catch. the last five overs Bresnan.

With 20 needed from two overs Adil  Rashid went for a straight six off Patel and picked out Ed Pollock on the long off boundary.

The Vikings got 10 off that over and with 10 needed, the last over was entrusted to Brookes.  From the first two balls they got five then Brookes bowled a wide.  With three needed off three balls Pillans got too far under a drive and found Woakes at mid off.

Pillans said: “I was extremely disappointed in the way that I got out, the ball got a little high on my bat.  At the halfway stage we were quite happy with their score.”

Warwickshire skipper Patel said: “It was a very good game of cricket and both sides will feel disappointed that they haven’t won.  When Ambrose was batting we thought that 250 was a good score.  We were very good at the start of their innings but they got a partnership but we broke that.”

Put into bat Warwickshire made 270 four eight in their 50 overs with Ambrose top scoring with 77, which included an all run four when he reversed swept Rashid, Josh Poysden got to the ball but it was in vain.  When he’d came into bat Warwickshire were hitting a sticky patch and was the  seventh man out in the penultimate over when he tamely pulled  Pillans to Lyth  on the mid wicket boundary.

When he came into bat Warwickshire had lost two wickets for 53 runs inside the first 10 overs and shared in three partnerships of 40 or more.  His first with Sam Hain building a platform for an onslaught later on.

The pair added 40 in 12 overs but Rashid broke  the partnership when Hain over reached himself as he pushed forward and Tattersall took the stumping.

Ambrose was joined by former Vikings player Will Rhodes and the runs came slightly easier four the pair as they added 62 in 10 overs. Rhodes showed his intent  by reverse sweping leg spinner Poysden to the third man boundary.  Ambrose pulled Poysden through mid wicket for a single to bring up his 50 from 84 balls with three fours.

At the fall of Rhodes’ wicket in came 19 year old Liam Banks making his debut and had dream start.  He clipped  Pillans off his legs for a big six before adding added 41 in seven overs for the fifth wicket.

Patel added: “If we had won the toss we would have batted and I was surprised when they decided to bowl.”

Poysden, playing against his old club got two wickets.  His first wicket was Banks when he drove Poysden to Kohler-Cadmore on the long off boundary without moving an inch.  Four overs later Chris Woakes fell to they same combination and again Kohler-Cadmore didn't have to move an inch.

For the second one-day cup match running Pillans took three wickets.  He could have had four when on 36 Rhodes chipped Pillans agonisingly short of Patterson  running in from mid on, in his next over Pillans had his revenge when Rhodes tried to work him off his hip and Tattersall took an easy catch.

Pillans took his third wicket when in the 49th over Brookes top edged a flash and gave Tattersall an easy catch. He added: “To get five wickets the other day made it easier for me today and to contribute again to the team.”
